What Could Be is a series of possible futures generated through community workshops using science fiction to plan for long-term climate change impacts. The work is based off science fiction prototyping, a kind of speculative futures tool for envisioning, evaluating, and creating potential worlds.
Possible futures are rendered in a combination of visuals -- created via collage and text-to-image AI programs -- as well as audio narratives. Rendered futures inform strategic interventions to translate possible trajectories of change into implementable action. Iterations of What Could Be were installated in Barcelona, Spain and San Jose, California in the summer and fall of 2022.
